The truck had the original AM radio installed, that was not working. At this time, I am not out to install anything other that a simple system that will give me some sound. I have had a few boxes of speakers and a leftover head unit hanging around for years that I was planning to use. After finding that the head unit I had did not have Apple Car play, I opted for an inexpensive unit that has plenty of outputs on it for future expansion. I purchased this BOSS Head unit from Amazon. At the time, I paid $149.00
At some point I may do something a little more extravagant, however after driving aroungd with it for a while, I'm really not sure I will ever be blasting music out of the cab. I do have 2 Bazooka Party bars (pics below) mounted on the back of the truck that work fantastic.
Here are a few pics of how I installed the head unit:
In the first picture, I unscrewed the pocket under the radio to turn the single din opening into a double din
Second picture, I marked and trimmed the Radio mounting brackets to fit within the plastic dashboard trim
Secured the radio and brackets
Completed the wiring
Connected the radio and reinstalled it with the dash trim
That’s it, Good to Go. It’s all set.
As far as the speakers go, I added the two speakers into the bottom panels of the door as this vehicle is extremely limited with space. There are many different ways to do this and I wasn’t even sure if the speakers were going to work well in that location or for that manner even sound decent so this was sort of a temporary fix to get sound into the little rig.
See this VIDEO for a quick explanation of how we cut the door and installed a custom panel we made on the CNC. Please note that we did not use any sound deadening material or go above and beyond in anyway as this is a temporary solution and will definitely post the upgrade when it is done. It took about 5 minutes to cut the hole in each door, and approximately 45 minutes to trace, draw and fabricate 2 plastic door panels. Maybe another 20 minutes in total to install the panels and speakers in the doors.
A few of my thoughts about the Speaker installation video, which went viral on multiple platforms.
The flat out hate and disrespect against a post is quite astonishing to me. I have neve seen such hate, and vulgarity for absolutely no reason. Just because the process in which we cut the speaker holes was something that was so foreign to the viewers. The assumptions that were made by the viewers were spoken as if they knew everything about the project. They assumed it was for a customer, they assumed it was for a vehicle to be regularly used outdoors, in the weather. They assumed it was stored outside in the rain, while assuming the raw edges will rust out the door in a couple weeks. Many claimed they can cut a door panel faster and better by hand than on a CNC. I was told my process of creating panels was wrong. I was told that I need to learn how to use tools and I need to purchase the correct tools to do this. I was told I should never work on vehicles again. I was told I am unprofessional. I was told I should burn in hell for this. I mean, what is wrong with people?
There was so many personal derogatory comments made to me directly about installing this temporary speaker that I am am actually concerned with the well being of these people. If you believe yourself to be a pro, make assumptions, tear people down and allow words of hate and vulgarity to spew from your mouth, I seriously think you need to reach out to someone for help. Take a look at yourself in the mirror ask ask yourself, what is at the core of what is making me loose if over a speaker installation? Just typing that made me smile. If you happen to own a business and a customer sees that one of those comments/reactions came from you, there is a fair chance you will loose that customer.
